Qualified Charitable Distributions

Maximize your charitable impact

Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs), also know as IRA Charitable Rollovers, are the savviest way for individuals to use their IRAs to maximize their charitable impact.

A Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) is a distribution from an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) that goes directly to a Sea Island Habitat for Humanity. Here are some potential benefits of making a QCD:

  1. Tax Advantages:

    • Exclusion from Income: The amount donated through a QCD is excluded from your taxable income. This can be particularly beneficial if you are required to take a minimum distribution from your IRA but don't need the additional income.

    • Satisfies Required Minimum Distribution (RMD): If you are 72 or older and have to take RMDs from your traditional IRA, a QCD can count towards satisfying this requirement. This allows you to fulfill your RMD while also supporting a charitable cause.

  2. Reduced Adjusted Gross Income (AGI):

    • A lower AGI can have several financial benefits, including potential reductions in the taxation of Social Security benefits, deductions subject to AGI limits, and other tax credits that are based on AGI.

  3. Avoidance of Charitable Contribution Limits:

    • QCDs do not count towards the annual limits on charitable deductions. If you make a significant charitable contribution through a QCD, it won't impact your ability to take advantage of other itemized deductions.

  4. Simplicity and Efficiency:

    • QCDs provide a straightforward way to support charitable causes directly from your IRA. The funds are transferred directly to Sea Island Habitat for Humanity, eliminating the need for additional paperwork and simplifying the process.

It's important to note that there are specific rules and requirements associated with QCDs, and not all charities qualify. Before making a QCD, it's advisable to consult with a financial advisor or tax professional to ensure that it aligns with your overall financial plan and goals. Tax laws are subject to change, so staying informed about the latest regulations is also crucial.

How do I make a Qualified Charitable Distribution to Sea Island Habitat for Humanity?

Your QCD must be made directly from your IRA custodian to Sea Island Habitat for Humanity on your behalf. Each financial institution has its own process for initiating a qualified charitable distribution. To ease this process, we have created a rollover gift initiation form for you and your IRA custodian to complete.
