Homeowner Spotlight

Celebrate our homeowners and stay up to date on their Habitat journey. Here, we recognize the hard work they've put in and the joy that comes from owning a new home.

Melissa

Melissa is one of the newest residents in our Heritage Oaks neighborhood on James Island. She came to Charleston from New York in 2012, along with one of her two sons, Maison. As she looked unsuccessfully for jobs in the area, she began wondering if she’d made the right move coming to the Lowcountry. She landed in section housing, searching for a break.

Melissa debated returning to her home state when she found a job at Harris Teeter. She began working and getting more acclimated to the area, but still knew she wanted more for her son, who was now a student at Trident Tech, and for herself. That’s when she turned to Sea Island Habitat for Humanity. She applied, began financial management courses with the Charleston Urban League, and even picked up a second job. After being approved for our homeowner program, she started working on her “sweat equity” hours by helping build the homes of her soon-to-be neighbors.

All that hard work paid off, as Melissa’s was the home selected for our annual Women Build week. Over 300 volunteers came from around the area to help complete the construction of Melissa’s home, which she closed on at the end June! She has been so gracious and thankful of everything Habitat has been able to do to make owning a home a reality, and we wanted to take this moment to share her story and congratulate her on accomplishing this huge goal!

Here's what Melissa had to say about her experience with Habitat:

Thanks to the Sea Island Habitat for Humanity and their wonderful volunteers from all over. My dream of becoming a homeowner is coming true! Although it wasn’t easy I wouldn’t change anything and I am forever grateful.
